Thief moves court to get booty back

AHMEDABAD: In a bizarre incident, a thief has staked legal claim to the cash that he had stolen from an angadia owner a few months ago.

The Ahmedabad sessions court got this strange application filed by Dilip Patel, who has been arrested for stealing cash from an angadia firm where he used to work. Dilip’s argument is that the cash he had stolen is his property and should be handed back to him.

According to police, Dilip was an employee of Arvind Kantilal Angadia owned by Thanaji Prajapati. On April 2, 2009, Prajapati filed a complaint at Navrangpura police station accusing Dilip of stealing Rs 5 lakh from the firm. Dilip was later arrested along with his accomplice Jagdish Patel from Mehsana. But, when the cops nabbed the duo, they recovered Rs 70 lakh — Rs 65 lakh more than what Prajapati claimed in the complaint!

So, Dilip claimed that the excess money was rightfully his. Dilip moved an application before the court saying Prajapati’s complaint said only Rs 5 lakh had been stolen. So, rest of the money should be given back to him, Dilip argued. However, Prajapati later changed his story and told the police that he had under-stated the amount in the complaint to keep Income Tax officials away. He also moved the Gujarat High

Court to get back the amount. Finally, Prajapati got his money back when the HC directed the police to release the amount after taking a bank guarantee worth Rs 70 lakh.

Have you heard of a more bizarre incident.
I'll just allow you to think.
I won't comment.
