Robbers make a 'childlike' mistake

Mumbai: Two burkha-clad women posing as customers decamped with a gold mangalsutra valued at Rs84,500 from a jewellery store in Kurla (West) on Monday when the shop owner was busy showing ornaments to customers.

However, what could have been a fool-proof theft, as their faces cannot be seen in the CCTV footage, may soon land them behind bars as the footage clearly shows the face of the 5-year-old girl the women had tagged along.

The incident took place on Sunday at around 12.30 pm when two burkha-clad women, along with a kid, visited Nakoda Jewellers at New Mill Road. There were two other women customers in the shop at the time. The shop owner, Nandlal Jain, 54, and his servant, were busy showing ornaments to the four customers.

Finding them occupied, one succeeded in opening the glass of the show case, picked up a 50gm mangalsutra, andconcealed it in her burkha. The women soon left without making a purchase.

The incident came to light ten minutes later when Jain was shocked to find that the glass of the showcase, where the women were standing, was open and a gold mangalsurtra was missing. His servant and he tried to look for it, but to no avail. Later, Jain checked the footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the shop, which revealed how the robbery was executed. Jain then lodged a complaint at the Kurla police station.

Sub inspector Adinath More of the Kurla police station said, "We have seen the footage of the robbery. The two con women were completely covered by a black burkha. They were present in the shop for only ten minutes. However, the face of the 5-year-old girl, is clearly visible," More said, adding that a case of theft has been registered.


We should not blame the minority community for the above.
They may have been women of any religion who took advantage of the protection a burkha gives against inquisitive eyes to carry out their nefarious activity.
Unfortunately for them, the child accompanying them and whose face was captured on the CCTV will help nab them.
The burkha has been used in elections by men too to cast false votes.
It is upto the minority community to see that their burkahs are not misued for if they continue to be misused then they should not blame the police if they started removing the burkhas for check
