THIS IS THE BEST LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR IN USA.
A Charlotte, NC lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire, among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires."
The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued... and WON!
(Stay with me.)
In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer "held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire" and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires."
NOW FOR THE BEST PART...
After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

HONESTY COUNTS
There was a farmer who sold a pound of butter to the baker. One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to see if he was getting a pound and he found that he was not. This angered him and he took the farmer to court.
The judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The farmer replied, your Honour, I am primitive. I don't have a proper measure, but I do have a scale. The judge asked "Then how do you weigh the butter?"
The farmer replied "Your Honour, long before the baker started buying butter from me, I have been buying a pound loaf of bread from him. Every day when the baker brings the bread, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in butter. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker."
What is the moral of the story? We get back in life what we give to others.
Whenever you take an action, ask yourself this question - Am I giving fair value for the wages or money I hope to make ?
Honesty and dishonesty become a habit. Some people practice dishonesty and can lie with a straight face. Others lie so much that they don't even know what the truth is anymore. But who are they deceiving ? Themselves -- more than anyone else.

Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company's Christmas Party. Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all. He didn't even remember how he got home from the party.
As bad as he was feeling, he also wondered if he had done anything wrong due to his drunkenness. Jack had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose!!
Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins, and cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror.
Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick:
"Darling, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favourite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Jillian"
He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper. His 16 year old son is also at the table, eating.
Jack asks, "Son...what happened last night?"
"Well, you came home after 3 A.M.., drunk and out of your mind You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and you got that black eye when you ran into the door.
Confused, he asked his son, "So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??"

The Socrates Triple Filter Test
In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"
Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."
"Triple filter?"
That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is TRUTH. “Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”
"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and...."
All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of GOODNESS. “Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?”
"No, on the contrary..."
"So", Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about my friend, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left: the filter of USEFULNESS. “Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?”
“No… not really…”
“Well,” concluded Socrates, "If what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor useful, why tell it to me at all?"
This is why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.
So, lets use this triple filter each time we hear loose talk about any of our near & dear ones (friends/relatives/colleagues). It will save us time and trouble.

Locking the Stable after the horses have bolted
Govt mulls making molestation non-bailable offence

Taking a lesson from the Ruchika case, the Government is considering making molestation a non-bailable, cognisable offence in which the accused can be arrested based on a complaint.
According to the draft of the proposed Sexual Crimes (Special Courts) Bill, 2010, the Law Ministry has proposed making molestation a cognisable, non-bailable offence.
So far, a person accused of molestation under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code could be granted bail as the maximum punishment stipulated is less than three years.
"According to the preliminary draft, a person cannot be released on bail unless the public prosecutor is given a chance to oppose the bail plea.
In other words, a judge cannot deliver an ex parte judgement," a senior Law Ministry official told PTI.
He said the details are being worked out.
"We expect women organisations and other groups to provide more suggestions before the final draft is sent to the Home Ministry," he added.
Since creation of special courts would require amendments in the Code of Criminal Procedure, the matter comes under the Home Ministry.
Law Minister M Veerappa Moily had said that after going through the Ruchika case, he had decided to work on the new Bill which will help fast track disposing of cases of sexual crimes.
The Bill also proposes to set up TADA like fast track special courts to deal with such cases. These courts will have powers of a district court and hand down judgements within six months to one year.
The lighter punishment of six months in jail for molesting Ruchika and the immediate bail granted to former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore had created an uproar.
They say every cloud has a silver lining.
We must thank SPS Rathore, for shaking up a whole nation and the action which they are taking , although belated, is being taken now.
This should have been taken when the first rape occurred.
Day to day trial should take place not only in rape cases but also all the following cases: terrorism, murder, drug smuggling, adulteration of food and medicine, people bringing in counterfeit currency notes into the country.
Unless we expedite these cases and convict the persons within six months, they continue to take advantage of the loopholes in our penal system.
I fully subscribe to China's method of punishing culprits.
The drug smuggler Akmal Shaikh was executed for smuggling, in spite his being British.
I don't thing we would dare.
The only other country who I know would dare is Israel.
Once we start imposing the death penalty for the above crimes, they will automatically decrease.
Presently murderers get bail and then threaten the witnesses and delay their trial by every conceivable means.
Why would they be interested in fast justice?
They are already out on bail.
Just like Rathore.
All these 19 years he was out enjoying life will poor Ruchika's family was slogging it out when it should have been the other way round.

Youngest Surgeon in India
The genius of India!
A year ago a footage emerged from a remote village in India .
The video showed a young girl receiving surgery to separate her fingers,
which were badly burned and fused together. Why did this operation make headlines
around the world? The surgery was performed by a 7-year-old boy
named Akrit Jaswal.
Now 13 years old, Akrit has an IQ of 146 and is considered the smartest person
his age in India a country of more than a billion people. Before Akrit could even speak,
his parents say they knew he was special.
'He learned very fast,' says Raksha, Akrit's mother. 'After learning the alphabet,
we started to teach him joining of words, and he started writing as well.
He was two.'
At an age when most children are learning their ABCs, Akrit was reading
Shakespeare and assembling a library of medical textbooks. When he was 5 years old,
he enrolled in school. One year later, Akrit was teaching English and math classes.
Akrit developed a passion for science and anatomy at an early age.
Doctors at local hospitals took notice and started allowing him to observe surgeries
when he was 6 years old. Inspired by what he saw, Akrit read everything he could
on the topic. When an impoverished family heard about his amazing abilities,
they asked if he would operate on their daughter for free.
Her surgery was a success.
After the surgery, Akrit was hailed as a medical genius in India .
Neighbors and strangers flocked to him for advice and treatment.
At age 11, Akrit was admitted to Punjab University . He's the youngest student
ever to attend an Indian university. That same year, he was also invited to London's
famed Imperial College to exchange ideas with scientists on the
cutting edge of medical research.
Akrit says he has millions of medical ideas, but he's currently focused
on developing a cure for cancer. 'I've developed a concept called oral gene therapy
on the basis of my research and my theories,' he says. 'I'm quite dedicated
towards working on this mechanism.'
Growing up, Akrit says he used to see cancer patients lying on the side of the road
because they couldn't afford treatment or hospitals had no space for them..
Now, he wants to use his intellect to ease their suffering. '[I've been] going to
hospitals since the age of 6, so I have seen firsthand people suffering from pain,' he says.
'I get very sad, and so that's the main motive of my passion about medicine,
my passion about cancer.'
Currently, Akrit is working toward a bachelor's degrees in zoology, botany and chemistry.
Someday, he hopes to continue his studies at Harvard University .
This lad indeed has a gifted brain.... His parents used to sell portion of their
investments to purchase his Medicine related books that he wanted to study and
today he gets everything from people who really want him to ful fill his dreams....

JAIPUR: Close on the heels of Ruchika Girhotra's 19-year-old molestation case making waves, another episode in which a top cop allegedly raped a tribal woman 13 years ago but has not been brought to justice has surfaced in Rajasthan.
The victim, hailing from Rajasthan's Dausa district, who was allegedly abducted and raped by an IPS officer, today sat on a dharna here along with her family members and Independent MP Kirori Lal Meena after she was not allowed to meet Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot at his residence.
Around 50 people led by the MP are on the dharna at civil line railway crossing demanding justice for the victim.
"Gehlot had given us appointment for the morning, but the police officer on duty at the CM's residence denied us entry," the victim's husband Khyali Ram Meena told reporters here.
The woman was allegedly abducted and taken to Noida in Uttar Pradesh in January 1997 where she was allegedly raped by former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Madhukar Tandon, then posted in police headquarters and is now said to be absconding.
State Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said that the event took place some years ago and the government will find out why the official was not arrested and whether he is alive or dead. The government will go into the matter, he said.
Ruchika has opened the floodgates.
Previous rape victims of high ranking police officers are finally finding their voices seeing the reaction of the people.
Previously they had kept quiet our of fear or helplessness since they knew they would not get justice.
I hope Brinda Karat will also take up this case in parliament to give justice to this tribal woman. I hope Karat does not think since this is a tribal woman her case should be allowed to die down naturally.
I am happy to note that the government has instructed all police stations to accept FIRs.
From personal experience I know that the when the police accept an FIR, they treat you as if they are doing you a favour.
This is the feeling of all government employees.
They do not act as if they are there to help us, they act as if they are our masters.

Murshidabad has divorced her husband because he would not let her go to school.
Sixteen-year-old Bula Khatoon had agreed to get married on the condition that her father would persuade the 24-year-old groom to let her study. He was not so persuaded and she walked out on him.
The Class X girl is back at Moregram High School again, dumping a life only of cooking and chores.
“When I found that my husband was only interested in letting me cook for the family and do the household chores, I revolted. I told him I always wanted to study and would not stop now because of marriage. I was under the impression that my husband had agreed. But he refused to allow me to study. So, I returned home,” said Bula.
In his eagerness to get her married, her father had not even raised her terms with her prospective in-laws.
Nizam Sheikh, a mason who had never been to school, said: “I had assured her that she could continue with her studies in the hope that I would be able to persuade my son-in-law about it.”
“I had also thought that maybe my daughter would give up her wish to study after marriage,” he added.
After her wedding before a qazi — a Muslim marriage registrar — on April 21, Bula had left for her in-laws’ at Nalhati in Birbhum, 20km away.
According to Muslim personal law, a girl can get married after 15.
The man Bula had married, Ejajul Sheikh, ran a mobile repairing shop. He had taken it for granted that she would busy herself in household work after the wedding.
“When I came home with my husband a week after our marriage, I told him I will not return before my Madhyamik exams (in February 2010). My husband wanted to take me back to his house. But I refused. My parents, my elder brother, sister and all our neighbours insisted that I return. But it was my determination to study that kept me back,” the teenager said.
As her husband and in-laws would not relent, Bula went through a mutual divorce in September.
The girl cleared her selection tests for the secondary exams earlier this month.
Bula is Nizam’s third child and already the most educated in the family. Her elder brother Taherul has studied up to Class V and elder sister Rezina till Class VIII. Her younger brothers Zahirul and Jaman are in Class IX and Class V.
Moregram High School headmaster, Ujjal Chowdhury, said Bula was a sincere student. “When she got married, we thought her fate would be the same as many of our students’. But we had a pleasant surprise when she started attending school again after about 10 days,” he said.
“We are trying to encourage her in her studies,” the teacher added.
Bula admitted it had not been easy for her.
Ejajul conceded that he had got married primarily because the family needed someone to cook and do the chores.
“I needed a homemaker, someone who would cook and look after the family as my mother had died about a year ago. But when I saw how resolute she was about her studies, I agreed to a mutual divorce,” he said.
The two of them went for divorce to the same qazi who had got them married five months before. Maulana Qazi Haibotullah said he had conducted at least 60 divorce cases over the years, but not one of them had been because the woman wanted to study.
Nizam said that when he got his daughter married, he had half a wish that her son-in-law would agree to let her study. Now that the marriage has been annulled, he promised he would encourage his daughter to keep studying.
It is truly encouraging to note the resolve of the young MUSLIM girl to study. What I like even more is that the groom has not raised any objection and agreed to divorce her (mutual consent) so that she can continue her studies.
If more people follow their example, there is some hope for Muslims.
Another point worth noting is that madrassas in Bihar have started imparting general education, including science and mathematics, not just the Koran.
Hindu students have started studying in the madrassa.

What's in a name?
All Mehboob Pathan (50) of Valak village on Surat’s outskirts wanted was a job in the city. Having a Muslim name, he felt, came in the way. So, to get himself a job in Surat’s diamond units, he passed himself off as Jayenti Bhatti, and managed to find work in two separate units in the Kapodara area.
Early this week, his “cover” was blown, after he was brutally killed over a monetary dispute. As the distraught family stepped forward to admit that Jayenti Bhatti was indeed Mehboob Pathan, they worried that having been cremated as a Hindu, the practising Muslim’s soul may not find peace.
In the ledgers of Surat’s diamond units, there are many leading a double life like Pathan. His son Mushtaq is registered as Mukesh and daughter Samina as Sharmila, and both are afraid of losing their jobs if the fact was known.
Diamond industry sources and workers say many Muslims assume Hindu names to find work in the city’s lucrative diamond business
Pathan’s story came to be known after his body was found in a farm at Antroli last Monday, with the head smashed in. The police registered a case and kept the unclaimed body in the Palsana Primary Health Centre mortuary till Thursday. Then they arranged to give Pathan alias Bhatti a Hindu funeral, with all the rites.
His family, who had been looking for Pathan, had filed a missing complaint. Then, seeing news stories in local newspapers about an unclaimed body, Mehboob’s brother-in-law Iqbal Pathan decided to check. By that time, Pathan had been cremated, but the brother-in-law identified him from a photo of the body.
The family says Pathan was a pious Muslim and the change of name was just so that he and his children could find and keep a job. “We are too poor to do anything, but how could the police dispose of his body the Hindu way?” asks son Mushtaq. “A genital examination would have shown he was a Muslim.”
Sub-Inspector of Kadodara police V R Malhotra said they had kept the body in the mortuary hoping someone would turn up. “We disposed it of according to Hindu rites not knowing he was a Muslim. The family turned up too late and we are now helpless.”
Kapodara police inspector S J Tirmizi, who is probing the murder, confirmed that Pathan had passed himself off as Bhatti for work. Manoj Rokad, who is the manager of the Varachha unit in which Pathan’s daughter Samina works as a diamond polisher, has reportedly confessed to the murder
According to the police, Rokad had become a family friend of the Pathans and knew their real identities. Two years ago, Pathan had reportedly loaned Rokad Rs 60,000 for an emergency, which he never returned. Pathan used to call Rokad repeatedly asking him to return the same, and the latter reportedly asked Pathan to meet him on December 20. They went to Antroli village, where Rokad allegedly killed Pathan with the help of two other diamond polishers, who have been identified as Chhanya Rathod and Sanjay.
While Rokad has been held, and has reportedly admitted that they beat Pathan to death, Rathod and Sanjay are on the run.
There is nothing wrong in changing names for the sake of our stomachs.
During the world war II many Jews changed their names and get-up just to escape the Nazis.

LONDON - A British priest has advised people in "desperate situations" to shoplift from chain stores.
Reverend Tim Jones said society "leaves some people little option but crime," the BBC reported.
The Anglican clergyman made the controversial remarks while addressing the subject of how poverty-stricken people deal with the holiday season during his Sunday sermon
The Daily Mail newspaper reported that Jones said it "is permissible for those who are in desperate situations to take food that they might not starve."
"My advice, as a Christian priest, is to shoplift," he told parishioners in the northern England city of York.
"I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither.
"I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices."
'Indifference and contempt'
Jones, a father of two, said people who find themselves suddenly unemployed or released from prison are often treated with "indifference and contempt."
He suggested that shoplifting was preferable to prostitution, burglary or violent crime.
Jones said that those in dire straits "should not hurt anybody and cope as best they can".
"When we, as a society, let our most vulnerable people down so terribly badly, I would rather that people take an 80 pence ($1.28) can of ravioli rather than turn to some of the most appalling things," Jones told BBC Breakfast on Tuesday. "Burglary causes untold harm and damage to people in a way that taking a can of spaghetti rings from a supermarket doesn't.
"That's not to say that shoplifting is good. Shoplifting is a dreadful thing but sometimes that's all we leave people with."
'Storm of protest'
The remarks sparked a firestorm of protest, and a summons from Archdeacon of York Richard Seed, who said in a statement posted on his Web site Tuesday that the church rejects the view that shoplifting can be acceptable. "The Church of England does not advise anyone to shoplift, or break the law in any way," he said. Eleanor Course, a spokeswoman for Seed, said the Archdeacon wants to meet with Jones to discuss his sermon.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police described Jones' sermon as "highly irresponsible," while the British Retail Consortium also condemned the clergyman's views.
Jones told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he stands by his comments. He said he regretted only that most of the focus had been on his shoplifting comments rather than his other points. "The point I'm making is that when we shut down every socially acceptable avenue for people in need then the only avenue left is the socially unacceptable one," he said, adding that people are often released from prison without any means of support. "What I'm against is the way society has become ever more comfortable with the people at the very bottom, and blinded to their needs," he said.

We produce the highest milk in India
India set to retain top spot in milk production

AHMEDABAD: India is expected to maintain last year’s record of being the world’s largest milk producer, with an estimated 110 million tonnes in 2008-09.
The country achieved the distinction with the production of 104.8 million tonnes in the 2007-08, according to a spokesman of the National Dairy Development Board.
The spokesman said the world’s milk production was expected to be 688 million tonnes in 2008-09, a marginal 1.7 per cent increase over the previous year as against about four per cent increase achieved by India.
Within the country, farmers’ milk cooperatives showed a better performance. They procured about 9.2 million tonnes, an increase of 9.7 per cent over the previous year, handling over 14 per cent of the national marketable surplus. The cooperative sector covered about 21 per cent of the country’s villages and over 18 per cent of the total milk-producing households in rural areas.
The NDDB had prepared a Rs. 173 billion plan for the next 15 years to increase milk production with better productivity, substantially strengthening and expanding the infrastructure for procurement and human resources development. The NDDB had also set up a Centre for Analysis and Learning in Livestock and Food at Anand, in central Gujarat. It would provide reliable and efficient laboratory services for livestock, dairy and food sectors.
Its a pleasure to note that India is leading the world in production of milk.
But then how much does each Indian get out of the 110 million tons.
Our population is approximately 1200 million. So if this milk was distributed equally among our population, each person would get about 92 Kg of milk per year, i.e 250 ml per day.
However we know that 60 % of our population earn less than Rs 30 per day, so there is no question of their getting milk.
Hence 110 million tons are distributed between 480 million people.
So these people on an average get 600 ml of milk per day.
That figure looks much better.
Well done India.
Well done Congress and our leaders for giving us Independence and so much milk.

The NDDB had also set up a Centre for Analysis and Learning in Livestock and Food at Anand, in central Gujarat. It would provide reliable and efficient laboratory services for livestock, dairy and food sectors.
Its a pleasure to note that India is leading the world in production of milk.
But then how much does each Indian get out of the 110 million tons.
Our population is approximately 1200 million. So if this milk was distributed equally among our population, each person would get about 92 Kg of milk per year, i.e 250 ml per day.
However we know that 60 % of our population earn less than Rs 30 per day, so there is no question of their getting milk.
Hence 110 million tons are distributed between 480 million people.
So these people on an average get 600 ml of milk per day.
That figure looks much better.
Well done India.

The buses leave Karunamoyee at 7 a.m. and passengers report an hour earlier. While travel documents and tickets are checked, and bags tagged before passengers board the bus, the security check on passengers and luggage is done only when the bus reaches Petrapole close to the international border. There is a thorough check at the immigration centre just before the bus enters Bangladesh territory. However, the immigration centre is at a distance of 85 km from the terminus at Karunamoyee.
The West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation has drawn the attention of the police to this shortcoming requesting them to set up arrangements for a thorough check of luggage and the passengers at the international bus terminus itself as a safety measure in view of the terror attacks in Mumbai and other cities, and the security alerts issued from time to time by the Centre.
The state home secretary, Mr Ardhendu Sen said they would look into the request of the transport corporation, but noted that police escorts are provided with the bus.

Airport nightmare: Rogues fleece fliers
Time: 3.50 pm. Location: Kolkata airport's domestic terminal. Relatives of arriving passengers waited anxiously outside the departure gate. A group of rough looking men hung around in the crowd, chatting loudly. All of them had key rings dangling from their fingers. A few minutes later, passengers from a SpiceJet flight from Guwahati start streaming out of the terminal pushing their baggage trolleys. In seconds, all hell breaks loose as the toughs swarmed the terminal porch.
One of them barked: "Kochi, start bargaining!" A lanky youth instantly accosted a passenger and grabbed his baggage trolley. Bending close to the startled passenger's ear, he shouted: "Do you need a cab?" The passenger refused and moved to the parking lot where he had a car waiting. Kochi caught the next passenger, and the next, and finally succeeded at the sixth attempt.
Grabbing a Sikh passenger's arm, he hustled him to the approach road. Within seconds, three other cronies surrounded the passenger. "Where will you go?" they asked. Trapped between the quartet, who looked like ruffians, the man turned pale. "Howrah." "Pay up Rs 450," came the demand. The passenger, realising it was way over the regular fair, feebly bargained.
Meanwhile, Kochi slipped away to corner another passenger. "Pappu, you look after him while I get another," he shouted and made off. He and two others managed to catch a couple who had landed on an Air India flight from Shillong. "We will go to Bhowanipore but won't pay more than Rs 150," said the smart lady passenger, taking the upper hand in the bargain before Kochi & Co could quote their rate.
One of the trio grabbed their baggage trolley and began walking. The couple thought they had struck a good deal when the shocker came. "Please pay only Rs 100 more," said Kochi. Infuriated, the lady passenger tried to wrest the baggage trolley back but he held on.
"Bappa, where do they want to go?" another crony joined in. An elderly person standing nearby watched the spectacle with mounting anger. "They are worse than the touts outside Eden Gardens," he grumbled.
Meanwhile a Jet Airways flight from Mumbai had arrived and Bappa found a prospective foreigner. His destination was Esplanade. Bappa quoted "only 1,000". The foreigner had obviously consulted a Lonely Planet guide and wasn't willing to pay more than Rs 500. Bappa continued to bargain. "Let's be reasonable. Pay Rs 650 and get going sir. But you will have to share the cab. Please wait," he rattled off without giving the passenger a chance to speak.
The foreigner meanwhile, kept a wary eye on the touts harassing the couple headed for Bhowanipore. Sensing that the men meant trouble, he grabbed his bag and walked off towards the air-conditioned luxury Volvo coach waiting. He forked out Rs 50 fare and boarded the bus.
Ruing the loss of a lucrative customer, Bappa remarked to others: "We must stop the Volvo buses from entering the airport."
All along, policemen and CISF jawans were present but turned a blind eye to the harassment. Confident that law would not interfere in their turf, Kochi, Pappu, Bappa and others got ready for the next set of flights to arrive.

A toddler and an aged woman have got a new lease of life following a non-surgical procedure that extracted the foreign bodies they had unknowingly swallowed.
Sagnik Laha, 2, swallowed a 5cm-long iron nail he was playing with at his Chandernagore home on December 20. “My son got hold of the nail while carpenters were working in our house,” said father Sukanta, a trader.
“Suddenly we found the nail was gone. When we asked Sagnik he pointed at his throat,” recalled mother Saraswati.
An X-ray revealed that the nail was stuck in the small intestine.
“The nail was lodged in the third part of the duodenum, a curved area around the pancreas and in front of the aorta, the largest blood vessel of the body. Even a slight movement could have led to the puncture of the internal structures and bleeding,” said gastroenterologist Mahesh Goenka, who performed an endoscopy on the boy at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Calcutta, to extract the nail.
“The endoscope was protected with a tube to ensure that the nail did not damage the intestinal walls while being taken out,” said Goenka, the director of the Institute of Gastroenterology at the hospital. The boy was released from the hospital a couple of days later.
Around the same time as Sagnik had swallowed the nail, a 77-year-old woman who refused to be named swallowed a denture. “She was suffering from abdominal pain. A colonoscopy was performed and the nail was taken out through the rectum. The procedure lasted 45 minutes,” said Goenka.
A doctor said that earlier such extraction would have been impossible without surgery.
The lower dentures are normally very unstable since they do not have the same area of support as the upper dentures.
Some years back one of my colleagues too had swallowed his dentures (two or three teeth) when he was drinking water. Fortunately the doctors could remove doctors without nay major damage.
I am sure the above procedures would be helpful for such accidents.
Science has been beneficial to mankind.
However, what happened before these procedures were developed?
I'll relate an incident which occurred in Burrabazar many years ago.
A servant in our neighbour's house had stolen a diamond nose pin.
The house lady guessed it and asked the servant but the servant cunningly swallowed the nose pin.
The house lady was very resourceful.
She made the servant eat raw bananas and locked him in a room for the whole night.
The next morning she made him relieve himself in the room itself on some newspapers.
Then she made him spread the faeces and lo and behold, the diamond nose pin was there.
You could try this procedure.

The railway ministry seems more bothered about the safety of its security personnel than the lives of passengers.
People travelling by trains passing through a 43-km stretch between Jasidih in Jharkhand and Jhajha in Bihar are at the mercy of Maoists and criminals like those who shot Howrah resident Siuji Prasad Gupta on Friday night because none of these has guards on board.
Railway minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a Rs 350-crore integrated security scheme for “important stations” but no plan has been drawn up yet to protect passengers from robbers on moving trains.
Escorts, including Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police, were withdrawn from trains passing through the area a year ago after Maoists started targeting them for arms and ammunition. The decision was jointly taken by the railways and the state governments of Bihar and Jharkhand.
“We couldn’t have allowed our personnel to become sitting ducks for Maoists attacking trains mainly to loot arms and ammunition,” a senior RPF official said on Sunday. “The spate of incidents last year proved that the Maoists target security personnel, not passengers,” he added.
But what about criminals who prey on passengers? “There’s a flip side to everything,” the official admitted.
Several north India-bound trains from Calcutta pass through that stretch, which comes under both Eastern and East Central Railway. The trains include the Rajdhani Express through Patna, which runs on Sundays, Poorva Express, Toofan Express, Danapur Express and Amritsar Mail, on which Gupta was shot.
Rattled by Friday night’s incident, the rail authorities have requested the Bihar and Jharkhand governments to “jointly deploy” escorts on trains passing through the stretch. “A joint security plan will be drawn up in a day or two,” said B. Mohan, the chief security commissioner of Eastern Railway.
Of the 227 long-distance and 1,600 local trains to and from the city, only 113 are manned by the RPF. The GRP provides personnel for a similar number of trains.
Most passengers are unaware about passing through a Maoist den without security, while those who do board a train with a prayer on their lips. “It is scary. The last time I was on the Amritsar Mail, I noticed that there were no guards on the train. When a team boarded the train at Jhajha, I asked them why they weren’t there when we were crossing the inter-state border. I was shocked to hear that they were not supposed to guard a train passing through a Maoist-infested area,” said Sanjib Mukherjee, a company executive who often travels to Patna.
It is indeed surprising.
The security forces cannot even protect themselves so how can they protect the travelling public.
Our politicians have destroyed all discipline so at the first sign of trouble these protectors run away.
We saw that happen during the attack on the American Consulate in Kolkata.
What are then they paid for?
The government neither gives them proper training nor arms.
Appointments are made on the basis of castes to fulfil quotas and payment made to the touts in between.
So we are seeing the result.
There will be many more 26/11 with the politician we have.

DGP SPS Rathore - Contd
Shame and shun men like Rathore

Retired Director-General of Police SPS Rathore must be ruing the day he smirked his way out of court after being convicted of molesting the 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra, way back in August 1990. Rathore’s satisfaction stemmed from the fact that he had received a token six-month sentence and been fined a laughable amount. Out on bail and pending a decision on his appeal, the retired police chief of Haryana was confident that he would use the all-too-familiar judicial delays to see out his natural life without punishment.
Rathore’s calculations were justified. But the outward show of smug arrogance, captured vividly on TV, did him in. Ordinary people throughout the country were disgusted and repelled by Rathore’s lack of remorse and contrition and the body language of swagger that comes from wielding power. We have all witnessed this swagger in officials who jump queues, the upholder of justice whose minions turf reserved passengers out of their berths on trains and policemen who think that the law exists for private gratification. This week we even had the spectacle of a Raj Bhavan being turned into a venue of some spirited sexual Olympics because a Governor deemed it so.
The only difference is that Rathore took the headiness of power to stupendous heights-molesting an innocent teenager, harassing her family to force a withdrawal of charges, encouraging his colleagues to brutalise her brother and finally driving the victim to suicide. Rathore ruined the lives of the Girhotra family because they had the gumption to protest against his moral waywardness.
Yet, the point to note is that Rathore succeeded because he had the blessings of an Establishment that is so infatuated with power that it lost the ability to distinguish wrong from right. The complaint against Rathore was initially made on August 16, 1990; a departmental inquiry completed on September 3, 1990, held that prima facie there seemed a basis for proceeding against him; yet the FIR was filed in 1999, and that too following a CBI inquiry. In the intervening nine years, Rathore rose to the top police job in Haryana. He even came close to getting a medal for exemplary conduct.
The rise and rise of Rathore happened not because the blot on his character was unknown but because both the political and bureaucratic elite equated the molestation of a 14-year-old with a bit of harmless fun on the side. The sheer incongruity of a child molester turning into the custodian of law and order did not strike the Haryana elite. And that is a social commentary.
Was Rathore turfed out of his club (or at least advised to stay away) because he was a groper? Did he receive any fewer dinner invitations during his service? The social and political elite of Chandigarh should seriously introspect on their own culpability in furthering the tyranny of a pervert. Rathore’s smirk was not the bravado of a beleaguered pensioner; it also reflected social sanction.
What is particularly galling is that even the religiously-inclined authorities of Ruchika’s school had no qualms about facilitating shameful intimidation of the Girhotra family. Those who took vows in the name of god had the girl expelled from school on a technicality. They knew exactly what they were doing and they stand indicted in a court that is far superior to a mere court of law. Maybe, just maybe, the incident should propel the Church authorities to ask whether their institutions serve god or a perverted Caesar. Indeed, it is strange that the question hasn’t been asked so far.
The Girhotra family has been ruined and no amount of belated retribution can help them recover what they have lost. For the country, however, the onrush of indignation may yet serve a function.
There are many Rathores in the system who will wilfully subvert all institutions to get their own way. The bureaucracy has thrown up its rotten apples and even the judiciary has managed its share of the non-kosher. Of politicians, there are few expectations and the real novelty lies in the occasional appearance of decency. As for the media, the ‘paid news’ controversy has indicated that influential sections of the Fourth Estate are plain racketeers.
What can be done to deter the mushrooming of Rathores in both the Government and civil society? To suggest that everyone must follow a moral course is desirable but it is widely known that the ability to compromise (the Indian term is ‘adjustment’) and even look the other way pays handsome returns — far more than the pitfalls of becoming a ‘whistle-blower’. It may be far more effective to combine institutional vigilance with social sanction.
In village India, where there exists a mismatch between the cumbersome procedures of law and perceptions of what constitutes justice, it is common to use social ostracism as an effective punishment. The jajmani system does not operate in a market-driven economy but there is still merit in depriving tyrants and deviants of their proverbial hookah-pani. If Rathore hadn’t been indulged and protected by his brother officers in both the police and the civil bureaucracy, justice may have come far earlier. The identity of these individuals is known and, in any case, will not take too much prying to unearth. The media will be doing a social service if it publicises these names — Om Prakash Chautala and Bhajan Lal are the easy targets — and waits for public disgust to take root.
Will those who helped Rathore and nurtured his career be able to look their daughters and grand-daughters in the eye? Will they not be haunted by the face of Ruchika? Will they continue to live with the fiction that they had nothing to do with her death?

Retired Director-General of Police SPS Rathore must be ruing the day he smirked his way out of court after being convicted of molesting the 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra, way back in August 1990. Rathore’s satisfaction stemmed from the fact that he had received a token six-month sentence and been fined a laughable amount. Out on bail and pending a decision on his appeal, the retired police chief of Haryana was confident that he would use the all-too-familiar judicial delays to see out his natural life without punishment.
Rathore’s calculations were justified. But the outward show of smug arrogance, captured vividly on TV, did him in. Ordinary people throughout the country were disgusted and repelled by Rathore’s lack of remorse and contrition and the body language of swagger that comes from wielding power. We have all witnessed this swagger in officials who jump queues, the upholder of justice whose minions turf reserved passengers out of their berths on trains and policemen who think that the law exists for private gratification. This week we even had the spectacle of a Raj Bhavan being turned into a venue of some spirited sexual Olympics because a Governor deemed it so.
The only difference is that Rathore took the headiness of power to stupendous heights-molesting an innocent teenager, harassing her family to force a withdrawal of charges, encouraging his colleagues to brutalise her brother and finally driving the victim to suicide. Rathore ruined the lives of the Girhotra family because they had the gumption to protest against his moral waywardness.
Yet, the point to note is that Rathore succeeded because he had the blessings of an Establishment that is so infatuated with power that it lost the ability to distinguish wrong from right. The complaint against Rathore was initially made on August 16, 1990; a departmental inquiry completed on September 3, 1990, held that prima facie there seemed a basis for proceeding against him; yet the FIR was filed in 1999, and that too following a CBI inquiry. In the intervening nine years, Rathore rose to the top police job in Haryana. He even came close to getting a medal for exemplary conduct.
The rise and rise of Rathore happened not because the blot on his character was unknown but because both the political and bureaucratic elite equated the molestation of a 14-year-old with a bit of harmless fun on the side. The sheer incongruity of a child molester turning into the custodian of law and order did not strike the Haryana elite. And that is a social commentary.
Was Rathore turfed out of his club (or at least advised to stay away) because he was a groper? Did he receive any fewer dinner invitations during his service? The social and political elite of Chandigarh should seriously introspect on their own culpability in furthering the tyranny of a pervert. Rathore’s smirk was not the bravado of a beleaguered pensioner; it also reflected social sanction.
What is particularly galling is that even the religiously-inclined authorities of Ruchika’s school had no qualms about facilitating shameful intimidation of the Girhotra family. Those who took vows in the name of god had the girl expelled from school on a technicality. They knew exactly what they were doing and they stand indicted in a court that is far superior to a mere court of law. Maybe, just maybe, the incident should propel the Church authorities to ask whether their institutions serve god or a perverted Caesar. Indeed, it is strange that the question hasn’t been asked so far.
The Girhotra family has been ruined and no amount of belated retribution can help them recover what they have lost. For the country, however, the onrush of indignation may yet serve a function.
There are many Rathores in the system who will wilfully subvert all institutions to get their own way. The bureaucracy has thrown up its rotten apples and even the judiciary has managed its share of the non-kosher. Of politicians, there are few expectations and the real novelty lies in the occasional appearance of decency. As for the media, the ‘paid news’ controversy has indicated that influential sections of the Fourth Estate are plain racketeers.
What can be done to deter the mushrooming of Rathores in both the Government and civil society? To suggest that everyone must follow a moral course is desirable but it is widely known that the ability to compromise (the Indian term is ‘adjustment’) and even look the other way pays handsome returns — far more than the pitfalls of becoming a ‘whistle-blower’. It may be far more effective to combine institutional vigilance with social sanction.
In village India, where there exists a mismatch between the cumbersome procedures of law and perceptions of what constitutes justice, it is common to use social ostracism as an effective punishment. The jajmani system does not operate in a market-driven economy but there is still merit in depriving tyrants and deviants of their proverbial hookah-pani. If Rathore hadn’t been indulged and protected by his brother officers in both the police and the civil bureaucracy, justice may have come far earlier. The identity of these individuals is known and, in any case, will not take too much prying to unearth. The media will be doing a social service if it publicises these names — Om Prakash Chautala and Bhajan Lal are the easy targets — and waits for public disgust to take root.
Will those who helped Rathore and nurtured his career be able to look their daughters and grand-daughters in the eye? Will they not be haunted by the face of Ruchika? Will they continue to live with the fiction that they had nothing to do with her death?

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi on Saturday described the alleged anti-Bihari remarks of the Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit as irreponsible and said it reflected her narrow-mindedness. Dikshit, it may be recalled, wants common economic zone to ease burden on Delhi.
Talking to reporters in Rajgir, where he is spending the last week of the year, Nitish said Sheila Dixit's statement holding Biharis responsible for the problems plaguing Delhi is an irresponsible act. “We condemn it”, he said.
He said that Delhi is the nation’s pride and it does not belong to somebody. All the citizens of the country have equal and full right on it.
Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, while talking to media in Patna, criticised her remarks and said it was not expected from a leader like her. Her statement was against the country’s unity and integrity, besides constitutional prestige, he alleged.
Wile I do not support this type of speeches by Sheila Dixit since it is against the federal structure of India, I cannot help but blame the Leaders of Bihar for bringing about this feeling among other state people.
Repeated misrule by various chief ministers ever since independence has brought about this state of affairs.
Although many of them were educated, they promoted caste politics, corruption and other negative tendencies which has brought about this. I am sorry to say but, even Jain Prakash Narain whom many people revere was not above this caste politics.
This slide continued right up to the time of Lalu Yadav, who was the worst.
Only after the coming of Nitish Kumar have things started improving. In the meantime while India moved forward, Bihar went backward. We can therefore safely say that Bihar is 120 years behind states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka.
Our own state Bengal started moving back after the left front came to power. Bengal you can say is 70 years behind the rest of India. But we are catching up with Bihar. While Bihar has started improving, Bengal is still going back.
Thus we see that, after Biharis, the Bengalis are the next largest group seeking employment outside their state.
Reactions against Bengalis have already started from Gujarat and the South.
However, what surprises me is Sheila Dixit has not said anything against the illegal Bangladeshis.
Again vote bank politics?

Shibu Soren - An Appeal from family of person he arranged murder
'Don't allow Soren to become Jharkhand CM'
As Shibu Soren hopes for yet another innings as Jharkhand chief minister, the family of his slain ex-secretary said on Saturday that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief should not be allowed to take up the job as the appeal against his acquittal in the murder case was pending before the Supreme Court.
The family of Shashi Nath Jha, in whose murder Soren was acquitted by the Delhi high court, said their petition challenging the acquittal has been admitted by the apex court and appealed to political parties to prevent him from becoming the chief minister.
The family -- Jha's daughter Preeti and brother Vijay Nath Jha -- in a press conference in New Delhi also appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene to expedite Jha's murder case and to deliver justice to them.
"We appeal to the prime minister to intervene to help us as we fight for justice in the face of threats," Preeti told journalists.
She said though the SC has set March 8, 2010, as the first date of hearing in the case, the delay in justice has enabled Soren to claim the chair of CM again.
"Our petition has been admitted by the apex court... but Soren's becoming CM again will reflect on the condition of our system. People will completely lose faith on our political system," said Jha's friend and co-petitioner Mukesh Baba.
"We appeal to all political parties, including the BJP, which have offered support to Soren's party, to refrain from helping him," he said.
Jha was allegedly abducted by Soren's close aides in 1994 after he came to know about the alleged deal between the Congress party and the JMM to save the then P V Narasimha Rao government in a no-confidence motion.
While Soren was convicted and sentenced to life by a lower court for murder, he was acquitted in August 2007 by the Delhi high court, which had earlier asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to take up the case.
Jha's family moved the Supreme Court in November 2007 against the high court verdict.
The court recently admitted the plea and set March 8, 2010, as the date of hearing after Soren failed to submit a reply to the court's notices, the petitioner said.
"If he becomes CM, our case might further be hampered. The authorities have not even acted on our demands to provide us security in the wake of threats," Baba said.

We have been facing this problem in Bengal since 1967 when the CPM started gaining power here..
On an average, we have one bandh every two months either by the CPM left front or by Mamta Banerjee.
However, now that Mamta is expecting to become CM of Bengal, we expect she will behave more responsibly and there will be fewer bandhs from her side.

Two former judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday said the six-month term awarded to former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation-cum-suicide case was “insignificant” and the decision of the special CBI court would not send the right message.
One of the two judges even went to the extent of asking what action, if any, was initiated against the officers and politicians who didn’t allow even registration of a simple FIR for a long time and allowed Rathore to continue in office and get promotions despite facing such serious charges.
Their observation assumes significance as both dealt with the case when they were still judges of the High Court. Coming two days after another former judge, R L Anand, first told The Indian Express that justice had not been done in the case, the strong comments of the two judges — Justices N K Sodhi and N K Sud — only adds much-needed weight to the public clamour for stricter punishment for the former DGP.
The judges echo the voices of the masses.
Now let us see what the central government does.

What is the Definition of BPL
How skewed is data on India's poverty?

A contentious statement on Indian poverty, put out some years ago by Arjun Sengupta, said that 78 per cent of Indians lived on less than Rs 20 a day. That figure always looked problematic, but has become a favourite statistical weapon in the hands of the Left. So it is just as well that the Suresh Tendulkar report on poverty has effectively nailed that number.
The Tendulkar report says that 25.7 per cent of urban residents are below the new definition of the poverty line, because they spend less than Rs 578.80 per month.
That is Rs 19/day, close to the Sengupta benchmark. Given the urban-rural mix of 28:72, if the Sengupta claim of 78 per cent for the country as a whole (urban and rural) is correct, then 92 per cent of all rural residents would have to be consuming less than Rs 20/day.
Against this, the Tendulkar report says that 41.8 per cent of the rural population consumes less than Rs 447/month, or about Rs 15/day. If Dr Sengupta's figure is correct, then another 50 per cent of the rural population consumes between Rs 15 and Rs 20 per day.
The visual evidence and statistical probability tell us that this is improbable, if not impossible. But it is a safe bet that the Sengupta number will not die, because it is too convenient a figure for the poverty industry to give up.
There is also the important point that these numbers are based on National Sample Surveys, which (as Surjit Bhalla has argued) report consumption levels that are much lower than what National Accounts tell us. If this bias were to be corrected for, even Prof Tendulkar may have overestimated the poverty level, which he says envelops 37 per cent of the country as a whole.
The longer-term issue is whether we can arrive at better ways of looking at poverty - and there has to be more than one. India has traditionally looked at food intake as the single yardstick; the Tendulkar report now looks at affordability with regard to a bigger basket of goods, which is the right way to go-but it does not go far enough.
India looks at consumption by an individual, whereas the consuming unit is really the family - and a two-person family will not spend twice the money that a single person does, nor will a four-person family spend twice as much as a two-person family.
So, measuring individual-level consumption can be misleading. Some countries go further, looking at age groups and other demographic patterns, but at the moment it would be a huge advance for India if poverty estimates moved to the family as a unit.
Then there is the question of absolute and relative poverty. The US looks at both absolute poverty (actual income) and relative poverty (income level in relation to the median, meaning the 50th person in a ranking of 100 individuals). The European Union too looks at relative poverty - defined as being income that is 60 per cent lower than the median. Strictly speaking, this is a measure of inequality, but it is an important measure when assessing patterns of growth.
India's inequality level is usually said to be low, certainly much lower than China's - but the comparison is incorrect because India looks at consumption equality while most countries look at income. As Pranab Bardhan demonstrated in 'How unequal a country is India?', if you look at income inequality in both countries, India is now significantly more unequal than China. And when it comes to other inequalities (land holding, education, and opportunity in general), India is considerably worse off. Ditto with inter-generational movement.
Our economists are splitting hairs as to the percentage of people below poverty line.
To the poverty stricken family, percentages are unimportant.
One who doesn't get two square meals a day and has to sleep hungry with his wailing children, for him, 100% are below the poverty level.
Even if one person has to sleep hungry or has to beg for his food, it is a shame on India.
I don't care what is the American or European or Chinese definition of poverty and it makes no difference to the hungry person.
I agree some people make a business of beggary and maim and employ little boys and girls to beg for them.
Healthy young men pretend to be lame, or blind and play on your softer sentiments.
Then there are women who take on rent small children and beg on the streets. They usually sit outside temples and eating houses where the devotee is in a sentimental mood to gain his sympathy.
Once a person sees himself cheated by these fraudulent methods, he does not like to give alms.
It is better, if begging is banned.
Any beggar found on the street should be given to NGOs to provide them work. Any work, mannual, handicrafts etc according to their ability.
Industrial houses and philanthropic organisations could adopt these NGOs and provide them work, funds and also look after their performance.
It is better if the government reduces tax and allow these houses to give directly to the people instead of through the government. As it is only 10% of what the government sanction's goes to the targeted people.
We have a population of 120 crores.
Surely we can provide useful employment to these people to at least give them minimum necessities so that they do not have to beg on the streets.
