Mayawati's request thrown out

SC rejects Mayawati plea to withdraw scholarship benefits

NEW DELHI, 15 SEPT: The Supreme Court today refused to allow the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh from withdrawing the provision of free education and scholarship benefits earlier given to poor students belonging to general as well as OBC category by the previous state government. The previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government had extended the benefits of a scheme providing scholarships to students from families with income less than Rs 1 lakh per year, even if they were from OBC or general category.
A Bench of Justices RV Raveendran and BS Reddy dismissed the Mayawati government’s petition challenging an Allahabad High Court order that suspended the UP government’s May 2008 executive order, withdrawing free educational facilities to the poor general and backward category students beyond class 10. The Mayawati government had sought the apex court’s permission to scrap free educational facilities for non-Dalit students in the state.
As per a 2006 scheme of the state government, all poor students whose parents’ annual income was less than Rs 1 lakh, irrespective of their caste, were entitled to free educational facilities in the state beyond Class 10, including access to various private professional colleges like those of engineering, medical and management.
Chief minister Miss Mayawati had passed two orders last year, allowing the scholarship benefits only for students belonging to SC, ST category but withdrawing the same from OBC and general category students. Legal Correspondent

Is the stomach of an OBC person smaller than a SC/ST stomach or are the hunger pangs of a general category persons less than that of SC/ST?
It is now more than 60 years since India received independence but our leaders continue to pamper to these vote banks. It seems that they have an interest in keeping them poor.
Then leaders themselves have already crossed the poverty line and have now become the creamy layer.Their wealth would put to shame many of the high caste people.
They would like to hold on to their vote banks by giving these props.
It is good the Supreme Court has seen through the gimmick and thrown out Mayawati's petition.
