Jyoti Basu - Epitaph

We come to the end of an era in Bengal.
While all the praises are being showered on the late Jyoti Basu, I hate to sound a discordant note.
History likes to be honest and when the history of Bengal is written it will note the years for 1967 to 2010 as the dark age in Bengal's history.
When Jyoti Basu took over power by foul means by removing Ajoy Mukherjee, Bengal was one of the leading states in India in everything.
It led industrially and in education. Its literacy rate was second only to Kerala.
Bengalis were toppers in all exams and you could find Bengalis in important posts all over India.
The unskilled Bengali never had to go out of Bengal as there was superfluous opportunities in Bengal. Rather, we provided employment to Keralites who came here as stenographers and typists.
The Bihari and UP people too found unskilled work in Kolkata.
How things have changed?
Unionism has shut down all industries except a few.
The Bengali worker now has to find employment in far away places like Gujarat and Kerala. He has to leave his Sonar Bangla, the land of Hilsa and Chingri and Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
Education was massacred, English removed from the curriculum.
Unions in schools and colleges destroyed all discipline.
Now educated Bengalis do not get employment in Bengal, leave alone outside Bengal.
Jyoti Basu did not allow computers in Bengal and thus we missed the IT revolution which went to Karnataka.
I suppose he will be kept on the pedestal as long as the CPM is in power in Bengal. However, when they go out of power and a realistic review done, he will be removed from the pedestal as was done in the erstwhile Soviet Union whenever a new regime came in power.
I know this is not the time for joking but I understand Jyoti Basu has donated his eyes and his body.
I wouldn't be surprised if when the person who received his cornea woke up, he would see all red and throwing his hand in the air he would shout "Cholbe Na, Cholbe Na"

So TRUE.....and very well put Mr.Sharma ! Is it any wonder that the Darjeeling District is in such shambles? Once a firm bastion for India's exclusive schools and now....
we hope for a better day for Bengal!
