Begusarai, June 25: Controversial Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP from Balia Suraj Singh alias Surajbhan Singh and his two associates were given life imprisonment on Wednesday for killing a farmer 16 years ago.
Fast Track Court Judge R P Dubey had on Tuesday pronounced the three guilty of killing Rami Singh at Madhurapur-Purvatola village in Begusarai district on January 16, 1992.

All three will have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 each. If they don't, they will have to spend an extra year in jail.

The three convicts were brought to the court from district jail amid tight security and the judge pronounced the quantum of punishment on Wednesday.

A total of six persons -- including Surajbhan – were named as accused in the case. While Surajbhan, Jaijairam Singh and Radhe Singh were convicted and handed down life sentence, another accused, Pappu Singh, is facing the trial separately.

His petition for separate trial was allowed by the court some time ago as most accused in the case were either evading arrest or not appearing in the court on dates.

Two other accused -- Suro Singh and Shanker Singh – were killed in a police encounter some time after being implicated in the Rami Singh murder case.

Surajbhan is the third serving member of current Lok Sabha from Bihar after RJD's Mohammed Shahabuddin and Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu to have been awarded life sentence for murder.

In a major reprieve for the Lok Janshakti Party ahead of the crucial trust vote in the Lok Sabha, jailed party MP Suraj Singh alias Surajbhan Singh was on Wednesday granted bail by the Patna High Court in connection with a murder case.

Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan heads the LJP, a constituent of the ruling UPA, which is facing a tough challenge in mustering a majority in the Lok Sabha after withdrawal of the Left from the government.

Surajbhajan Singh was granted bail by a Division Bench comprising Justice Shivkirti Singh and Justice Abhijit Sinha who rejected a stiff opposition from the prosecution.

Prosecution counsel Shyamseshar Dayal argued that two of the witnesses in the Rami Singh murder case, in which a fast track court had sentenced Surajbhan to life imprisonment on June 25, had deposed during the trial that he had personally shot the deceased in the temple.

"The MP has criminal antecedents," Dayal said opposing the bail.

Surajbhan's lawyer Rana Pratap Singh, however, rebutted the charge and said the injury report in the case maintained that the deceased was shot in the back of his head. "No evidence of the MP's direct involvement in the murder exists," he contended.

The "don"-turned-MP and two of his associates were sentenced to life by Begusarai Fast Track court Judge RP Dubey for the murder of farmer Rami Singh over 16 years ago.

Surajbhan and others were charged with having gunned down Rami Singh at Madhurapur-Purvatola under Teghra police station of Begusarai district on January 16, 1992.

The victim was suspected to have been involved in the killing of Ramadhar Singh, an associate of Surajbhan, over a land dispute.

RJD don’s wife does a Rabri
NALIN VERMA

Patna, March 31: Heena Sahab has spent most of her 36 years indoors, immersed in the scriptures and household chores. Now the devout housewife has to step out every day to speak to crowds of strangers from behind her burqa.

It’s not a situation her powerful husband, “don” Mohammed Shahabuddin, would have wanted. But his hands are tied.

A court conviction has barred the “Sultan of Siwan”, winner the last four times, from contesting the polls and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is banking on Heena to milk voter sympathy for its imprisoned “Robin Hood”.

“Political rivals have framed my husband in false cases. I am going to the voters requesting them to give him (Shahabuddin) strength by voting for me,” Heena says.

The parallel between Heena and Rabri Devi, the wife of Shahabuddin’s mentor and party boss Lalu Prasad, is hard to miss.

When Lalu Prasad had to step down as chief minister and go to jail in 1997 in a fodder scam case, he got the homemaker Rabri installed in his chair. She then contested and won an election for the first time to hold on to the chair.

If the RJD has its Heena, ally Lok Janshakti Party has a Veena — another “don” wife in the fray for the first phase of polling on April 16, when 13 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar elect their MP.

Veena Devi, whose husband Surajbhan has been convicted in a criminal case, is contesting from Nawada against the BJP’s Bhola Singh and a Congress rival.

In Siwan, Heena is pitted in a four-corner contest against Janata Dal (United) nominee Brishen Patel, the Congress’s Vijay Shankar Dubey and CPI-ML (Liberation) candidate Amar Yadav.

Brishen, who had won from Siwan in 1991 before Shahabuddin took control of the north Bihar seat, is resting his hopes on chief minister Nitish Kumar’s “good performance”. Yadav is relying on his Naxalite cadres to take on Shahabuddin’s strong-arm politics.

Lalu Prasad is contesting from adjoining Saran. His reputation for being lucky has been vindicated again, with the Congress nominee failing to arrive on time to file his nomination.

That has left the RJD boss facing a relatively weak BJP nominee, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, whom he had trounced in 2004. The BSP too is in the fray.

JD(U) strongman Prabhunath Singh, enmeshed in a string of murder and robbery cases, is trying to retain the Rajput-dominated Maharajganj seat. His main challengers are the RJD’s Umashankar Singh and the Congress’s Tarkeshwar Singh.

Congress heavyweights Nikhil Kumar and Meira Kumar may find the going tough in Aurangabad and Sasaram. The RJD has fielded nominees from both seats, and a resurgent NDA too is expected to mount a serious challenge.

Continuing my articles on our criminal politicians.
After Shahbuddin, Pappu Yadav and Taslimuddin, Suraj Bhan is the fourth Criminal MP from Bihar, a history sheeter and out and out criminal. He is supported by Paswan.
However, if you read the 1st two portions, you will see that he was convicted on 25th June, 2008 and was again out on bail on 16 th July, 2008. Just 21 days in jail.
My question is how can such hardened criminals be let out on bail. Everybody knows they will go out and threaten all the witneses.
This type of criminals should have no recourse to bail.
We have seen how all the witnesses against Taslimuddin turned hostile and he was released.
This type of criminals should remain in jail for their full term without any bail.
If they appeal to the higher court they should remain in jail until their conviction is set aside by a higher court. Pending their appeal, they should not be released on bail.
One of my friends has his relative living beside Suraj Bhan in Delhi.
He reports that Suraj Bhan goes about the place like a lord when he should actually be crouching like a rat in jail.
JUSTICE WILL NEVER BE CARRIED OUT IF THESE TYPE OF CRIMINALS ARE GIVEN BAIL.

The third part of this article shows the wives of these criminals are standing for elections in lieu of their husbands.
Heena Shahbuddin and Veena Bhan for their respective husbands.
Our constitution does not debar them, but the people should ensure that they do not win. They are just proxies for their criminal husbands to continue their criminal activities.
