CBI-A Tail Wagging Dog of the Central Government?

CBI rapped for Mulayam flip-flop

New Delhi, Jan. 6: The Supreme Court today pulled up the CBI for flip-flops in the disproportionate assets case against Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The court questioned the agency’s plea to withdraw an earlier application in which it had said there was no need to send a probe report to the Centre. Now, the agency says it wants to inform the Centre.

Justifying the change in stance, the CBI said it had received “representations from the respondents (Mulayam and his family) about the allegations”.

The court wasn’t convinced. “You had earlier said that you are an independent body, not under anyone’s control, you are not bound to submit reports to any government,” Justice Altamas Kabir, part of a two-judge bench, said as it questioned the turnaround.

CBI counsel Gopal Subramanium said sending a report didn’t mean the agency wouldn’t fulfil the court’s mandate to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion. But the judge retorted: “But should it be sent to the central government?”

The flip-flop of the CBI is nothing new.
It have been doing it ever since independence and will continue to do so as long as it is under the Home Minister.
The Home Minister is a stooge of the political party in power at the centre and all the constituent political parties which support the government.
When one set of corrupt politicians are in power, the CBI will be asked to initiate action.
When the second set of corrupt politicians come to power the previous order will be rescinded and an opposite order issued.
This is one of the reasons that the CBI is always slow to take action as they no that any action taken will be declared null and void by the subsequent government.
The only solution is to remove the CBI from the Home Ministry and bring it under the Chief Justice of India.
Only then we may see some reduction in India's Corruption Index.
