Tejpal, six others booked for using mobiles in prison - A suggestion

Panaji, Feb 28 (IANS) Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has been booked for possession of a mobile phone inside prison premises, an official said Friday.

Tejpal is one of the seven inmates at Vasco's Sada sub jail, located 35 km from here, who were found with a mobile phone during a surprise raid Sunday (Feb 23).

Tejpal, police said, was booked late Thursday under Sections 120 (b), 130 and 188 IPC and violation of other sections of the Prison Act.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said Tejpal's prison cell was raided following a tip-off by journalists based in Delhi, who informed the government about the Tehelka founder making calls to the national capital every morning.

Tejpal has been lodged in judicial custody for nearly two months, after a former junior colleague accused him of raping her twice during a conference in Goa held in November.

I don't understand why jail authorities confiscate the cell phones of jail inmates.

I would suggest that the most dreaded inmates should be supplied cellphones clandistenly as if supplied by their people.

Since the numbers would be known to the jail authorities, the call could be monitored by setting up a tower near the jail premises and recording all conversations.

Many crimes could be prevented, if this was followed.

Of course, the jailors may not like it for this would put a break on their illegal activities.
