Plea on VIP prisoners

Ranchi, Dec. 14: A petition was filed in Jharkhand High Court today, seeking the CBI's intervention in stopping the near-routine practice of high-profile prisoners choosing to get themselves admitted to hospitals in order to evade jail time.
Petitioner Durga Oraon named former chief minister Madhu Koda and three of his associates involved in the disproportionate assets case, along with his former cabinet colleagues Kamlesh Singh and Bhanu Pratap Shahi, for purposely evading detention at Birsa Munda jail by allegedly undergoing "fake treatment" at the state-run Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS).
The petition also levelled similar allegations against Vijay Joshi, another accused in the money laundering case, seeking a CBI inquiry on the genuineness of their admission to RIMS.
The high court will hear the case on December 19.
VIP prisoners, slipping out of their hospital wards, was also published in a local daily today and this was brought to the notice of the high court.
In his petition, Oraon mentioned that Joshi, was admitted to a RIMS ICCU, was only present when doctors come for their rounds. Rest of the time, including night, no one in the hospital was aware of his whereabouts.
Oraon also questioned the role of jail authorities and RIMS doctors, alleging that they must have a nexus that facilitated the hospital stays of such high-profile prisoners.
Influential prisoners managed to get themselves sick on paper and on the excuse of medical treatment spend time in hospital, he said.
Oraon said in his petition that the nexus between the prisoners and the hospital authorities was strong and everyone was aware t that the detainees were there to pass time.
The guards assigned to the prisoners were also not bothered about who come to meet them which was a violation of the provisions of the jail manual, he said.

The above is from the Telegraph.

What has been mentioned above is nothing new.
Whenever, the police go to arrest an influential person, be they the rich or politicians, the person immediately clutches his chest, faking pain and then lands in a hospital.
The courts also know know this and cannot feign ignorance. If they want they can act on their own, based on Newspaper reports.
The Satyam fame, Ramalinga Raju was said to hold complete meetings the whole time he was in hospital.
Nearer home, I understand that Radheshyam Agarwal, the majority owner of AMRI got himself admitted in to B M Birla Heart Research Institute when the police came to arrest.
Who is going to stop this rot?
Not the judiciary for they too follow the same procedure when they are in problem.
I do hope Anna is able to stop this.
