New Delhi, Dec 11(ANI): The Congress party on Sunday said that veteran social activist Anna Hazare was denigrating the Parliament by holding a fast to protest the Central government's version of the Lokpal Bill.
"This is taking people to a wrong path. It's Anna Hazare's right to sit on fast, but the way he is pointing Sonia Gandhi and Rahul is just a political stunt. He is playing politics," Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said.
"The government has promised for Lokpal Bill and it has been shown up in the Parliament. Lokpal Bill cannot be made at Jantar Mantar. Anna is insulting the Parliament," he added.
Hazare is currently holding a day-long fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to press for his long-standing demand for a 'strong' Lokpal Bill.
Before beginning the fast, Hazare had visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
He was accompanied by his close aides Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia.
Hazare had earlier reiterated his demand that the Centre should table and enact an effective Lokpal Bill that includes the lower cadres in government and other proposals suggested by the civil society members under the banner of India Against Corruption.
He had also lashed out at the Central government and Parliamentary Standing Committee for "betraying" the people by drafting a "weak" Lokpal Bill.
"The issues and provisions that appear in the draft released by the Standing Committee are same as those in the government version of the Lokpal Bill," he had said.
"The Standing Committee's draft mirrors what has already been said by the government. This proves that the Standing Committee has betrayed and misled the people. The Standing Committee's draft will not in any way help eliminate corruption from this country," he had added.
The Lokpal Bill is seen as a weapon to root out corruption and nepotism from the government machinery and in public life.
The proposed Bill envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.
The 74-year-old social activist had staged an indefinite hunger strike against graft that he gave up on August 28 when the government agreed to deliberate the issues raised by him and his forum vis-a-vis the passage and enactment of the Lokpal Bill, a suggestion that has received unprecedented nationwide backing. It was Devkanta Barooah who coined the phrase "Indira is India" and we know the result. Emergency and wiping out of the Congress in the coming elections.
Now, The Congress is equating parliament with the congress. We all know who makes up parliament. More than 60 % have criminal records and more than 40% are uneducated and can't even answer their e mails.
It is in the Congress's interest to maintain the status quo so that they can continue looting the country. After all they have been the main beneficiary for they have been ruling India for 50 of the last 64 years since independence
However, this parliament, leaving aside its differences, had give certain recommendations in August which allowed Anna to give up his fast.
The Standing Committee has made a mockery of parliament's recommendation - who is to blame?
The people of India have no faith in the politicians who make up our parliament.
They have more faith in Anna who represents the voice of the people.
