Ajmal Kasab hanged at Pune"s Yerawada Jail

Pune, Nov.21 (ANI): Ajmal Kasab, the prime accused for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, was hanged at Pune"s Yerawada Jail at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition.

According to television reports, the petition was rejected on November 5 after which the Lashkar-e-Toiba operative was shifted from Mumbai"s Arthur Road Jail to Pune"s Yerawada Jail.

The entire process was excuted in complete secrecy, television channels said. President Mukherjee"s rejection came two months after the Union Home Ministry rejected Kasab"s mercy petition.

Kasab and nine other Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists had sailed into Mumbai on November 26, 2008 from Karachi and killed 166 people. (ANI)

At last, the event which all Indians were wanting ever since 26/11 has been done.

I don't understand why it took so long?

It was an open and shut case.

If it takes so long in cases which have occurred under full TV coverage, how can we solve the millions of cases which are piling up in the various courts.

This problem should be seriously thought about.

Further, the alacricity with which our judiciary gives bail to kidnappers, rapists, extorters, murderers just encourages them to further crimes.

No sooner they come out of jail and then continue the nefarious activities for which they were jailed.

If necessary, new jails should be made.

There are 1336 prisons across the country, with Maharashtra having the maximum number (210). Prisons in India are categorised as central jails (111), district jails (293), sub-jails (852), women jails (15), borstal schools (10), open jails (8), special jails (20), and other jails (8). There are no set criteria - that are common to all the states and union territories - for differentiating between these prisons.

The population of India has increased threefold since independence.

Have the number of prisons increased in the same ratio.

Actually, these should have increased five folds since the number of criminals have increased much more than the increase in population.

Before independence our politicians were not criminals.

Now at least 60 % of our politicians have criminal back-ground.
