NEW DELHI – The suit Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore Sunday had something to say: his name.
The Indian suit, which Modi wore to meet President Obama at the presidential palace here, looked from afar to be navy blue with wide gold stripes. But it conveyed a message. The stripes were actually embroidered letters that spelled out Modi’s name.
Narendra Damodardas Modi, it read, over and over and over vertically.
Modi has made a number of bold sartorial choices during Obama’s visit. When he met the president at the airport – a break from tradition – Modi was clad in a cream-colored outfit with a bright orange shawl with paisley at the ends draped over his shoulder. He donned a green safa with a large, red, circular plume and an orange scarf attached at the back to Monday’s Republic Day parade.
Modi likes a saffron-tinted orange, the preferred color of his Hindu nationalist movement. During a reception in the lavish garden of the presidential palace Monday afternoon, Modi wore a bright orange shirt and a cream-colored shawl draped over both shoulders. He wore another orange piece at the India-U.S. CEO forum later that day – what appeared to be a vest with a neutral shirt underneath.
President Obama has, predictably, stuck to a wardrobe of dark suits.
Whether Acche Din have come for the country is another matter but they have surely come for Narendra Modi who has taken the meaning of "Designer Clothes" to a new high by having his name embroidered in his suit "DAMORDAS NARENDRA MODI".
I don't hear the media say anything?
As I said, it , the media, has been completely sold off.
