My son was asked to pay Rs. 10,000 at police station: Nido Taniam's mother

Itanagar/New Delhi: Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam's mother has said he was asked to pay Rs. 10,000 at the police station where he was taken after he was beaten by shopkeepers at a south Delhi market.

The 20-year-old died a day later. His family alleges it was due to his injuries from the beating.

"My boy called me, 'Mummy I am in police station. I have done this, they are asking money. Rs. 10,000. I told my boy what was the reason. Ok ,you have money ? Yes, mummy I have 12,000... If I pay this 10,000, tomorrow I can't go to college. I told him - don't worry, your sister is there, take from there and I will send you back...He paid Rs. 10,000," said Marina Nido. She added that she spoke to an officer who said "the problem is solved. Your son is great. He will be a big man."

Nido, the son of an Arunachal Pradesh legislator, was allegedly beaten on Wednesday at a confectionery shop where he and his friends had stopped for directions. He allegedly reacted angrily when a group of men ridiculed his appearance and broke a glass counter. He was allegedly assaulted with sticks and rods by the men.

Cops reportedly took Nido and the shopowner to the police station, where they negotiated a settlement. The student's uncle has said that he paid Rs. 7,000 for the broken glass. Nido then went to his sister's home where he was found dead the next day.

Nido's friends have released a video of him riding with cops to the police station.

An autopsy report has found that Nido died of a swelling in his brain and excess fluid in his lungs. Doctors, however, say the report has not established whether he died of the beating.

According to the Delhi Police, six people have been booked for assaulting Nido. Three of them have been arrested and two of the other three are juveniles.

This is exactly what the Aam Aadmi Party is fighting.

In spite of the Delhi being in the news so vividly because of the Dharma by AAP, the Delhi police did not hesitate to demand and take a bribe of Rs 10000/- from a person who was beaten up and died later on.

How long is the common man going to tolerate this?

I believe in the issue of racism and lawlessness prevailing in Delhi since a very long time with respect to the North eastern people and even South Indians due to a studied/deliberate lack of political willpower and feudal/chauvinistic mindset from the rulers right down the line. But in the video given where Nido is seated between 2 policemen going on a 2 wheeler, he is poking his tongue out and seems to be a mischievous/delinquent element/juvenile. However it might be true that the police constables took the money and let matters take their own course by bringing him back in the same area. Or he may himself have instigated the 2nd fight by pulling faces at the affected party thinking the accompanying policemen would now back him up as he was a politician's son. It would be interesting to know who or what killed him from the postmortem report and whether he was a sincere or aimless student?. We will have to wait and not pass judgement on the story yet.

CM Delhi has ordered an independent magisterial enquiry into the incident to verify the version of the Delhi police report and has also suggested to the north eastern students at the jantar mantar dharna to come forward and form a committee of north eastern students for solving this issue of racial prejudice and chauvinistic mindset towards minorities. This committee will then be notified by the AAP govt and given the infrastructural support needed to implement their recommendations from time to time and monitor such issues of law and order as much as possible in the Delhi region. (this would be in line with AAP's concept of a participatory democracy and true empowerment of its disempowered stakeholders)
