AAP candidate steals show while filing nomination

HARIDWAR: Aam Aadmi Party candidate Kanchan Chaudhari Bhattacharya stole the show on Tuesday with her supporters far exceeding those of Congress's Renuka Rawat and BSP's Mohammed Haji Islam as she filed her nomination papers for the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat.

Renuka Rawat, the Congress candidate and wife of Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat, arrived at the district complex to file her papers at 1.30 PM, while Bhattacharya, a former DGP, arrived at 2 PM.

While thousands had gathered at a Congress meeting held earlier at Pantdweep , less than a hundred accompanied Renuka to the district complex.

Bhattacharya said she did not see herself to be in contest with either Congress or BJP. "We will be content if our voice reaches the common man, for we are fighting for him," she said after filing her nomination papers. The former DGP said pesople were fed up with rampant corruption and unhappy due to poor infrastructure. All this will have its consequences in the coming polls, she said.

Islam offered 'chadar' at the the Sufi Sant Sabir's shrine, Peeran Kaliyar in Roorkee, before filing his nomination. The BSP was able to muster a disappointingly small number of supporters.
