Gurgaon: Traffic cop apologises after AAP fights for man thrashed ahead of chief minister's visit
A traffic policeman in Gurgaon who allegedly thrashed a rickshaw puller for entering a road that had been cordoned off for Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's convoy has apologized for the incident, adding that he had accidentally hit the man.
The apology comes after local leaders of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party intervened in the matter, alleging that other cops present at the traffic junction were mute spectators as the rickshaw puller bled after being allegedly assaulted by one of their colleagues.
In a letter addressed to the AAP unit in Gurgaon, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Niwas said, "I was trying to manage the public. While waving my baton, a rickshaw puller who was coming from behind got hit. I didn't purposely hit him... I apologise for this. Will take care of all his medical expense and will not repeat in future."
Sanjay Sahu, 40, was allegedly beaten up by Mr Niwas after he entered a road that was blocked off for Mr Hooda's motorcade on Sunday, Ramesh Yadav, Convenor of AAP in Gurgaon, told PTI.
Mr Sahu, who sustained injuries on his face, approached a nearby AAP office after he received no help from the policemen, Mr Yadav claimed.
But local cops claim that Mr Kejriwal's party was "unnecessarily highlighting the issue" as the rickshaw puller was not interested in pursuing the matter.
This is the VIP culture which Arvind Kejriwal is fighting against.
These VIPs have just no idea of how much time the common man loses just to accomodate him, how many trains and flights they miss.
If their time is important, let them use helicopters to move to the airport or their proposed visiting sites.
