The 5 men who got India suspended from the Olympics

Lalit Bhanot

An aide of Kalmadi, he faced charges of corruption in 2010 CWG. Spent 11 months in jail, but got out on bail. Was elected secretary-general. The world body’s ethics commission’s disapproved of the move and said that tainted officials like Bhanot cannot be part of the Olympic movement.

Suresh Kalmadi

Even after going to jail, he refused to step down. Later, he decided not to contest the elections. But this was enough to irk the IOC which had instructed the IOA to suspend Kalmadi. The whole episode added fuel to the fire and made the prompted the world body to take the extreme step.

Ajay Maken

Sports bill gained prominence when he was the sports minister. Fought aggressively to implement it and was met with fierce resistance by IOA. The Delhi HC ruled that the IOA elections be held under the sports code. The IOC, on its part, ordered the IOA to follow the Olympic Charter.

Randhir Singh

Those in the know say he secretly orchestrating the episode. It is said that Singh, who was “forced” to withdraw his nomination for the post of IOA president, used his influence in the world body and prompted the officials there to take action against the Indian body.

Abhay Chautala

Didn’t do enough to convince the IOC that the autonomy of the IOA will be protected. Ever since his appointment as boxing boss, Chautala has been at loggerheads with the sports ministry. The ministry objected to his appointment and this didn’t go down too well with the IOC.

The above is from Rediffmail.

The malaise of corruption has gone so deep into our life that it will be very difficult to remove it until the present political structure is thrown out lock stock and barrel. In spite of being disgraced by being thrown into jail Bhanot and Kalamadi continue to hang on.

This is not understandable to IOC who have never witnessed such corrupt arrogance.
