Patiala girl commits suicide after gang-rape

Patiala (Punjab), Dec 27 (IANS) A teenaged girl in this Punjab district, who alleged that she was gang-raped last month, has committed suicide, police said Thursday.

The victim committed suicide Wednesday night at her house in Badshahpur village near here after police failed to register a case for over a month after she complained that she was gang-raped by three youth.

Police found a suicide note from her house in which she said that she was ending her life as police were not registering a case and were humiliating her by calling her to the police station repeatedly.

Police sources here said that the concerned police station in-charge, sub-inspector Gurcharan Singh, has been dismissed and a probe by a senior officer ordered into the incident.

The victim wrote in the suicide note that the police officer used to call her to the police station and asked "uncomfortable" questions.

Police, in a later development, arrested two men and a woman in connection with the gang-rape incident.

In spite of all the rage against RAPE which is visible throughout India for the last week, this poor girl has committed suicide as her complaint has not been registered by the police.

Instead the police were regularly calling her to the police station and asking her uncomfortable question probably having sexual connotation.

The Punjab government has done the correct thing in dismissing the sub-inspector Gurcharan Singh.

But why only him. There must have been others involved in this sordid episode. They should all be dismissed.

And this should be made a standard procedure in all cases where a girls complaint of rape is not registered.

MAMTA BANERJEE, I HOPE YOU ARE LISTENING.
