Motherhood is such a stage in a female species life that it brings out their love for not only their own babies but the babies of all other species.
Our landlord who lives on the floor above us had a female alsatian dog.
It had given birth to a litter of pups.
Just at that time, Bangur had one of its annual floods.
A cat which had given birth to its litter left the babies in our staircase and vanished for safety.
Our landlord brought the baby kitten upstairs for safe keeping.
But they were hungry and were continuously wailing. He was worried and did not know what to do.
His daughter then took the kittens and put them with the alsatian pups to suckle the mother.
They started suckling and the alsatian allowed them.
Thereafter, the foster mother became very protective of the kittens and would not allow them to go far.
I am sure most of us remember Rudyard Kipling's story of Mowgli, the Wolf Boy who was suckled by wolves. It is possible and I believe it may have been true.
Well, Partha Sengupta has sent pictures of how a tiger suckled baby pigs and saved herself from trauma of having lost her own cubs.
In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.
After recovering from the delivery, the mother tiger suddenly started to decline in health although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.
After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans that could be found quickly were a litter of weanling pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops?
Take a look...you won't believe your eyes!!
Now, please tell me one more time...
Why can't the rest of the world get along?
Well, I suppose, Partha's answer is that God has given the animals instinct to live by His laws. They wake up at the break of dawn and go to sleep as soon as the sun sets. They eat only when hungry without gorging. They kill only to satisfy their hunger or to protect themselves. They mate only to have babies and that too in particular seasons.Their love is unselfish.
Fortunately or unfortunately, God has given the human race brains to use or misuse as per his nature.
I suppose, that is why people go to bed after midnight and wake up by about 10 AM.
We restrict our love for our own children only. The rest of the world may go to ..wherever they want.
We kill for pleasure. The sight of others suffering gives us a kick.
We mate too for pleasure without wanting the bother of having babies. All 365 days are OK for us. Truly man for all seasons.
