Women activists on Monday demanded an apology from Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati for his remarks on the lifting of the ban on entry of women into the famous Shani temple in Maharashtra.
The religious leader had said: “The entry of women into the famous Shingnapur shrine, which is devoted to Lord Shani, will drive more rapes.”
Terming the remarks as “outrageous and appalling,” the activists have threatened to stage protests if the Shankaracharya does not retract his statement.
“This is a really ridiculous and appalling statement coming from a religious head of an institution that is followed by so many Hindus. Rape is criminalised in India and comparing it to worship is not acceptable,” womens’ rights activist Ranjana Kumari said.
There seems no difference between the behaviour of the Hindu leaders and the Muslim maulvis.
