Christian Schools-Another View

I have been following your blog for sometime now and feel compelled to respond to a recent posting re: India.
Spent my formative years (late 1930s - mid 1940s) in India with a British ancestary of 4 generations in Bengal and Darjeeling.

My Response :

The legacy of the colonial times has finally petered out and these blokes don't seem to get it! India will revert to being a Hindu state again and Anglo-styled institutions will be repalced by those fashioned on the lines of the American system, if anything. The Hindus don't have a viable option outside of the gurukul/patshala set-up that couldn't possibly compete in these modern times; hence the American option. If the blighters have any sense they'll keep these free of religious affiliations.

This person ( Rodrigues ) Noronha forgets the primary purpose of the missionary aspect of Christianity is distict from Hinduism - There is no overt inducement but the reward is the propagation of the message of Christ. That's the satisfaction that the missionaries derived from their work unlike the South Indian Christians who filled the ranks of the clergy in the latter years and who are as far removed from the message of the Church as India is from the Vatican.

Besides, this Rodriguies makes it sound like Christians were being left out to accomodate Hindus in schools when in fact they needed the blighters in order to fill up the ranks.Where is the economic viability of running a school for Christians only, in a country where they make up about 3% of the population?

I note from my years in India - Hindus are a very passive people by and large - only massive provocation with incite the current nature of things we see...............as an gentleman of the Raj, I am sympathetic to the Indian masses..........opressed for hundreds of years...the cycle of life must persist!
