No Pakistani Onions for India

Pak salt in price wound
- Assassination-hit province bans onion exports to India
OUR BUREAU

Jan. 6: Pakistan’s domestic turmoil fried India’s kitchen budgets on a day it emerged that the food inflation here had shot up close to a year’s high.

Punjab, Pakistan’s most powerful province whose governor Salmaan Taseer was gunned down two days ago, has banned onion exports to India over land routes. It has stopped 300 trucks of onions bound for India on the Wagah border, citing rising domestic prices.

Onion prices increased to Rs 60-65 a kg in major markets in India.

“Retailers have jacked up prices on reports of the ban by Pakistan,” the general secretary of the Tomato and Onion Merchants’ Association in Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi said.

Soon after, the Pakistan government signalled the rollback of a fuel price hike. The desperate measures were concessions to Opposition demands in an attempt to defuse Pakistan’s latest political crisis.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s government is fighting for survival after a coalition partner withdrew in protest against the price rise, leaving the government without a majority. Pressure was piled from another flank by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whose party dominates the Punjab government.

New Delhi dubbed Pakistan’s decision “shocking”. Commerce minister Anand Sharma said the issue has been taken up with Islamabad.

“It is shocking and unfortunate that Pakistan has banned onion exports to India via land route,” Sharma said.

“The matter has been discussed with the high commissioner in Islamabad, who has already met the officials concerned there,” the minister added.

The secretaries of the ministries of agriculture, commerce and finance went into a huddle with cabinet secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar to find alternative supplies.

“I have concluded a contract with Pakistan via the sea route. Onions will arrive at the Mundra port (in Gujarat),” commerce secretary Rahul Khullar said after the meeting.

A Punjab province spokesperson said the ban on onion exports has been imposed to control prices of the commodity, which had escalated since the sales to India began last month. “After the ban, the prices in domestic markets declined by 45 per cent,” he said.

Pakistan started exporting onions to India for the first time in a decade in mid-December after prices skyrocketed here. Over 300 tonnes of onions were being sent to India every day. Traders said the exports pushed up prices in Pakistan from Rs 45 to Rs 80 a kg.

But the ban without notice, which reflected the pressure on the Pakistan government, angered traders in Punjab. The traders said they had not been given any warning and they had already accepted sizeable orders from Indian importers.

“The government should at least allow the 300 truckloads of onions at the border to be exported,” said Hamid Aziz, an exporter.

When the news of the ban was trickling in, the Indian government was announcing that food inflation has risen to nearly a year’s high of 18.32 per cent on December 25 because of a spurt in vegetables, onion and milk prices.

Kaushik Basu, the chief economic adviser in the finance ministry, said he agreed with home minister P. Chidambaram’s statement yesterday that the government did not have full control over prices.

“I mean this is a huge country in terms of population and land area. It is an utter mistake to think that it is fully within the control of the government to move prices of food up and down,” Basu said.

The above is from the Telegraph
Let this be an eye-opener for those who are planning to import gas from third countries to India through Pakistan.
At the drop of a hat and with the least provocation, Pakistan will stop essential supplies to India
It is OK if we make no investments in these projects but if we make investments it would be foolish.
After repeated proof of its enmity towards India we should avoid dealing with that country as far as possible.
It is better if we pay more and get reliable supplies than to depend upon Pakistan
We should be careful of both China and Pakistan.
Pakistan we have so far taken lightly since it is much smaller than us.
But now with its collaboration with China in our border areas, harmful to India's interest, we should be more careful.
China will only understand the language of strength.
No Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai will do with them.
We tried that once in 1962 and saw the results.
Unless we become strong ourself, we are no match more them no matter how much we tout our GDP.
However, with the present lot of corrupt politicians ruling in most states and the centre, I don't see how we can speak with a position against China.

Rape in UP

Rape accused BSP MLA may face heat from SC Commission
PTI – Fri, Jan 7 12:40 PM IST

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) The National Commission for Scheduled Castes may soon send a team to UP''s Banda district to get a detailed report on the rape of a minor Dalit girl allegedly by BSP MLA Purshottam Dwivedi.
The move comes after Lucknow Superintendent of Police Anil Das sent a preliminary report about the incident to the NCSC office a few days ago.
"We may soon send a team to Banda for a detailed report about the alleged incident. Depending on the contents, we may also recommend his arrest under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocity Act)", NCSC chairman P L Punia told PTI.
He said that in the absence of a national commission for OBC, the NCSC was empowered to probe atrocities on people of backward communities as well.
His comment come after the Mayawati government raised objections to the NCSC taking cognizance of the alleged rape case and blaming Punia, a former close aide of the UP chief Minister, for it.
The Commission was of the view that unless such matters are taken seriously, offenders think they can get away with the crime.
Meanwhile, the Congress in UP has alleged that despite the local court directing that an FIR be lodged in this connection, nothing has been done so far.
The opposition party on Thursday demanded the suspension of the Banda SP, alleging that an impartial inquiry by the CB-CID cannot be conducted till he was holding the post.
The 17-year-old victim was allegedly raped by the BSP MLA of Nareni in Banda in December last year. After the girl threatened to file a complaint against him, he levelled charges of theft against her.

A few days ago, a woman stabbed her rapist as she did not get justice from the system.
We see above how even in UP which is ruled by a dalit chief minister, a dalit woman is raped and the CM tries to protect the rapist.
The poor woman cannot expect to get justice as her rapist is again an MLA of the ruling party.
The only solution is bobbittising as murdering is a bit too harsh.
All rapist should be tried by fast track courts and bobbittised within 30 days, if found guilty.

Swamy slams Sibal''s remarks on CAG projection of 2G loss
PTI – Sat, Jan 8 1:24 PM IST

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) Terming as "highly objectionable" Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal''s remarks on CAG''s projection of the loss in 2G spectrum allocation, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy today alleged that it was an attempt to influence investigations into the scam.
Swamy said the court should take suo motu notice of the contempt of court committed by the Minister, who made statements about the case when the Supreme Court had passed an order directing the CBI to report to it.
The statement made by Sibal seeking to rubbish the CAG report on 2G scam was not only "highly objectionable" but also is a contempt of the Supreme Court, he said.
"Sibal''s ill-informed criticism of CAG report, perhaps on the direction from beneficiaries of the corrupt 2G deal, is tantamount to influence the court of investigation carried out by the CBI," Swamy, a petitioner in the 2G spectrum scam, said in a statement here.
He said he was moving an "interlocutory-application" in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Sibal from any further dealing with the files connected with 2G and as also for suo motu notice to be taken of Sibal''s contempt of court.
In an unusually strident criticism of the government auditor, Sibal yesterday slammed the CAG for its projection of Rs 1.76 lakh crore as presumptive loss on account of 2G spectrum allocation, terming its methodology as "utterly erroneous."
He said there was "no loss at all" to the exchequer due to allocation of licences and 2G spectrum in 2008.

When Raja was forced to resign and a DMK member had asked that that ministry be given to another DMK member and the PM refused and allotted it to Sibal, I thought he had acted wisely so that they could get to the bottom of the scam.
However, now it seems, Sibal himself is doing quite well to save the the DMK further embarassment.
Swamy is doing well in demanding that the Supreme Court to Shut the Minister's mouth.
I wonder if the DMK party has made some contributions to some trust of Sibal?

I have two problems in trying this potion.
I don't like garlic for the smell and can't take honey because I have recently joined the club Diabetic International. Of course, it is in the preliminary stage but I have to take all precautions.
Others could try it out and let us know the results.

Justice has been done

Rape-charge principal stabs MLA to death
JOY SENGUPTA

Patna, Jan. 4: A Bihar MLA was stabbed to death in full public view at his house this morning by a school principal who had levelled charges of sexual harassment and rape against him earlier.

Rupam Pathak, the 43-year-old mother of two, pulled out a knife hidden under her shawl and plunged it into Rajkishore Keshari, the ruling BJP’s MLA from Purnea, a little after 9am.

Rupam walked into the lawn of the MLA’s house while Keshari, 53, was interacting with around 10 people. Keshari acceded to her request to speak to him in private and moved a few metres away from the other visitors.

As soon as the two sat down, she whisked out the knife. Spotting the weapon, the legislator tried to crouch in the chair but he was stabbed in the back. Keshari died on the way to hospital, succumbing to the six-inch wound that ruptured his spleen.

The other visitors pounced on Rupam and beat her up. She is nursing her injuries in a hospital and is out of danger.

Purnea deputy inspector-general Amit Kumar said Rupam was not assaulted but overpowered by a security guard. A policeman and Rupam were injured in the scuffle. “The knife was big. A policeman who had tried to overpower her suffered minor injuries,” Kumar said.

Rupam runs a private school in Sipahi Tola of Purnea. The school was inaugurated on April 14, 2006, and Keshari was the chief guest at the event.

He had also taken part in the first annual function of the school in 2007. During this event, Pathak and her husband requested the MLA to sanction funds from his quota to build a road leading to the school. Keshari sanctioned Rs 1.93 lakh from the MLA local area development fund for the road.

Pathak, in a statement to the police, had said that when she had gone to the MLA’s residence on April 18, 2007, with the road proposal and photographs of the school’s annual function, the legislator had raped her.

The police said she did not co-operate when she was asked to undergo a medical examination. She also could not provide any physical evidence to support her charge, according to the police.

“She backtracked from her allegations when the matter was being heard in the court. On June 18, 2010, Pathak gave a statement in the presence of a magistrate under Section 164 of CrPC that she had levelled charges against the MLA after being influenced by some people. Pathak, however, did not reveal the names of the persons who had influenced her. Pathak’s husband also deposed that the charges levelled against the MLA were not true,” deputy chief minister and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said.

Following her statement, the case against the four-time MLA was closed.

Amit Sarkar, the CPM candidate who lost to Keshari in the last elections, said: “The police should have investigated the matter properly. Their lackadaisical attitude is one of the reasons behind the incident. We knew about the woman but never made it a political issue in the Assembly elections.”

The Congress demanded a judicial probe, saying had the police acted on the complaints of Rupam, the incident would not have happened.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar has ordered director-general of police Neel Mani to investigate all aspects in the case.

Lalu Prasad’s RJD took a dig at the law and order record but refused to comment on the charges levelled by Rupam.

Keshari’s son, who lives in New Delhi, was on his way to Purnea.

The above is from the Telegraph.
I think I echo the voice of most Indians when I say that justice has been done.
Instead of punishing her, a statue should be raised of Mrs Rupam Pathak with donations from the general public.
For too long have we been witness to the torture inflicted on the public by these politicians. N D Tewari, DGP Rathore and others are just a tip of the iceberg. Many cases are not reported or swept under the carpet as this one too would have been if the courageous woman had not attacked her rapists.
The courts take it very easily and the witnesses are threatened to change their testimony as this woman too had been made to do.
Now it appears she did it very unwillingly.\
The grievance remained and we are seeing the result.
I would suggest all security cover for all politicians accused in any crimes should be removed.
Why should the government be made to bear the cost of their misdeeds?
Then only can we expect honest politicians.

Buddha's Teachings

Once Buddha was traveling with a few of his followers.
While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his
disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from the lake."

The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart
started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became
very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this
muddy water to Buddha to drink?"

So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very
muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink."

After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple
to go back to the lake.

The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy.
He returned and informed Buddha about the same.

After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the
water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot
and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple
and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be,
and the mud settled down on its own and you have clear water.

Your mind is like that too ! When it is disturbed, just let it be.
Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't
have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless."

Having 'Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process !

Have a nice year ahead !!!

I suppose that is what we do in meditation.
We allow our mind to go blank, without any thoughts.
When it goes blank, it becomes the most powerful for then it connects with HIM.
